A Note from Debbie Ayer: PSO President – THANK YOU!

This week I want to start thanking my fellow Board Members. Along with the many parent volunteers that have supported the PSO and me over the years, I wanted to take a moment to say a special thank you to my colleagues who have served with me on the Board. We are only a small team but cover a huge amount of work over the course of the year. This week I want to say thank you to Cathy Cleland, our Secretary for a number of years now. Like myself, this is her final year on the PSO Board. Before she became the Secretary she volunteered for many PSO events, from the lunch program to the Night of the Griffins event, ever since her son started at Glendale Prep. Thank you, Cathy, for your patience – even as I type this, she is patiently waiting for the information for the weekly blast I send to her each Monday (sometimes Tuesday), so she can do her magic and make it into a readable document to send to the school. She is so kind and generous, and I am going to miss working with her in the future. So, thank you again, it’s been a real pleasure.

PSO Board Meetings

Our final PSO meeting will be May 2nd at 5:30 PM in the GP Library.

A Note from the Headmaster

Hello Parents,

I wanted to share with you a final tax credit contest. If Glendale Prep families and friends can bring in 80 new tax credits before April 15th, we will name an additional R&R weekend in the month of May. We have made announcements to students, so you can anticipate your child coming and asking you about this. Tax credits are a revenue stream for our school to make up the gap between what it costs for a classical liberal arts education and the funding received from the state. We do need your help, along with Community Investment. Thank you to all of you who have been so generous with your time and money.

Here are some helpful ideas regarding meeting our tax credit goal-

  • When posting pictures of your kids on social media at GP sporting events, in their uniform, or at a drama or music performance, please share this link Donate to Glendale Preparatory Tax Credit Drive [19] and ask them to support our school. Anyone who pays taxes in Arizona can give their tax credit to a public school of their choice; they do not have to have a student enrolled at that school to donate.
  • Ask grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors, and co-workers to support GP! Even if they anticipate a refund from the state of Arizona, they will get every dollar back!
  • Do you have an older child that has a job and pays taxes in Arizona? They, too, can give to our school! Single filers can give up to $200 a year, and those married filing jointly can give up to $400.
  • Are you a GP coach or have a student athlete? Please share with your fellow families and friends the importance of Tax Credits! They help keep our sports fees lower, so we do not have to pass the expense on to our families.

Thank you for your partnership,
Mr. Navarrette
Headmaster

Tax Credit Contest

The grade level Tax Credit contest is getting close! Thank you to everyone who has already given and/or spread the word to family and friends! The grade that gets the most Tax Credits will additionally get a Spirit Wear Day and ice cream at lunch. Here is an updated total:

  • 8th, 11th, and 12th grades are tied for the lead with 42%
  • 6th has 41%
  • 7th has 39%
  • 10th has 34%
  • 9th has 27%

Each student who refers a Tax Credit gift will continue to receive a free snack at lunch from the Snack Shack! There is still time to shift your tax dollars to Glendale Prep. Remember, you receive every dollar back, so giving your tax credit is no cost to you! The deadline is April 15th. Please reach out to Tammy Kempton with any questions at tkempton@glendaleprep.org [20].

2024 High School Retreat- DATES/ VOLUNTEERS

We are excited to announce our annual 2024-2025 High School Retreat to Lost Canyon [21] for rising 9th – 12th graders! Seniors will depart from Glendale Prep to Lost Canyon on Tuesday, August 27th for a 1 day/1 night senior retreat to then welcome 9th-11th grade students on August 28th. All high school students will return to Glendale Prep on Friday, August 30th. Please look for a detailed email, including a link to the payment portal, on Monday, April 8th.

We will need several volunteers for the parent work crew to support this event. Parents do not pay to serve on the parent work crew and additionally will receive 25% off the cost of their child(ren)’s fee for the retreat. Volunteer information and a sign-up link will be sent Tuesday, April 9th at 8:00AM. We are limiting volunteers to one per family during the first round of sign-ups. Volunteer spots have traditionally filled quickly; if you are interested, please make special note of this date and time, so you can watch for the email.

Anton Uniforms- Spring Sale

Anton Uniforms [22] will have a sale on all purchases [23] made between April 15th and May 12th, 2024. This is done in two phases this year:

  1. 15% off ANY purchase ordered between April 15th-29th (for Glendale Prep families ONLY) using code GLEN15
  2. 15% off on purchases of $200+ orders between April 30th- May 12th using code SAVEBIG and 10% off all other orders using code SAVE10

You can receive these discounts by shopping either online or by mentioning the code to the associates in-store. This is a great opportunity to stock up on school uniforms at current lower prices before they’re adjusted to reflect recent supplier price increases which begin on June 1st, 2024.

Anton understands that buying uniforms in advance can be a challenge, especially since children grow at different rates. The goal is to always provide a comfortable and well-fitting uniform, so they happily offer exchanges for up to two weeks after the start of the 2024-2025 school year (see flyer [24]for important details). Any orders placed outside of the sale dates fall under their typical 60 Day return/exchange policy.

Solar Eclipse Monday

Please partner with us about the solar eclipse on Monday by encouraging your children not to look directly at the sun. Students are regularly outside during passing periods and we want to ensure they understand how to keep themselves safe and prevent damage to their eyes.

*UPDATED* State Mandated Standardized Testing

Standardized testing has begun and will run through Friday, April 19th. While we understand there are illness and appointments that arise, we appreciate your help in making sure your student is present during testing times as much as possible. We will have an adjusted schedule for the week of April 8th – April 12th. The testing/class schedule is included in the chart below. If a student leaves campus during a test, he or she will have to submit the unfinished test and will not be able to complete it. Testing will be administered by grade level and make up testing will be completed at the earliest time available upon a students’ return to school.

Please ensure your student: (1) gets a good night’s sleep, (2) eats a nourishing breakfast, (3) arrives to school on time, and (4) has no appointments scheduled during his or her testing time slot.

Language Testing

Students will be taking part in the National Foreign Language Exams in the upcoming weeks during their regularly scheduled foreign language class. This is a very exciting opportunity for Glendale Prep students, as they have the chance to compete against other students across the country and overseas. Due to the standardized nature of the test, it will not be possible to reschedule the test if your student is absent, so it is important that your student is present on the day of their scheduled foreign language class. Please refer to the chart below for the dates of the various tests.

Please ensure your student: (1) gets a good night’s sleep, (2) eats a nourishing breakfast, (3) arrives to school on time, and (4) has no appointments scheduled during their testing time slot.

Please see the chart below for details:

Senior Thesis and Defense

Senior Thesis and Defense Panels are an integral part of the high school experience at Glendale Prep. Students have worked for almost a year on their Senior Thesis. All panels will consist of two main parts: 1) The Thesis Presentation- a brief presentation (of about 10 minutes) in which the student will highlight the essential ideas of the paper; and 2) The Thesis Panel Discussion- a panel of three faculty readers will be convened to conduct a discussion with the student about his or her Thesis (of about 45 minutes). Parents are invited to attend. Thesis panels will be at 3:30 (12:45 on Wednesdays) in the GP Library or at 3:45 in room 408.

A Note from Debbie Ayer: PSO President – THANK YOU!

This week I would like to thank our PSO Community and say a special thank you to all parents that have helped with an event or program over the many years I have been President. I have shamelessly used my British accent and charm (hehe) to persuade and get people to volunteer and help. I never took this for granted, and all of you that have helped know who you are. So, thank you, and please continue to help and support the PSO moving forward as a new chapter begins with the new board. Remember, this is a team effort and everyone who attends Glendale Prep is automatically a member of the PSO. So, please reach out and see where you can help: it may be a weekly lunch volunteer, a helper with the Uniform Exchanges, or perhaps you can help at one of our specific events. Whatever it may be, it is so appreciated!

Senior Trip Uncovers History and Friendship

Jackie Wang, a senior at Glendale Prep [64], recently documented her senior trip to Washington DC, sharing her experiences throughout the week. Wang admits that she had planned to journal the trip for herself before being asked to write a daily blog for the Great Hearts network.

“We just tried to see all the sites that DC has to offer. The first day was the monument day and we walked around the whole mall, and we saw the Washington Monument, the Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam [War Memorial], and the Korean War Memorial,” she recalled. “I just thought it was so great because when you think of DC you think of all these sites and obviously the White House … but I think the monuments are really what adds so much character to DC and so much of the historical richness is found with the monuments.”

One of the most memorable and impactful parts of the trip for Wang was the visit to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial. The memorial physically embodied portions of his famous ‘I Have a Dream’ speech, which she felt directly tied to some of the curriculum at Great Hearts. This trip stands as a capstone experience for the seniors, offering them a firsthand glimpse into the deep-rooted origins and tributes to our country’s Western culture—where they have explored and debated in their classrooms extensively over the past four years.

Seniors at Washington Monument during senior trip [65]

Aside from bringing lessons to life for the seniors, the trip serves as vehicle for comradery and a kind of farewell tour for friends who will soon be parting ways after graduation. Mrs. Sarbacker, the Assistant Headmaster and Director of College Counseling at Glendale Prep [64], told the seniors the trip will be a little bit of a taste of college life for them. “Just to experience friends in a new way and get deeper with people, especially with living with them for a week, and just seeing people in their everyday trying to navigate the Metro was definitely very character building for us,” said Wang. “I’m going to remember that fondly. Who can say that they’ve done that with their friends and their peers? That’s kind of a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”

Wang described the entire experience as bittersweet. “Looking back on the memories, it’s sad to think about parting ways with all these people. But I’m just so grateful for the time we shared together.”

You can read each of these Blog entries, as written and submitted by Wang, here:

Meet the 2024 National Merit Finalists at Great Hearts Arizona

2024 National Merit Finalists [73]

Last fall we announced ten seniors from Great Hearts Arizona [74] academies qualified as National Merit Semifinalists. We are pleased to announce that each of them has been named National Merit Finalists. Each student has been recognized as one of the 15,000 highest scoring entrants of the PSAT, qualifying them for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program [75] as finalists of over 50,000 high scorers and 1.3 million entrants.

National Merit Finalist Hayden Armstrong. [76]Hayden Armstrong from Trivium Prep [77]
Armstrong plans to study aerospace engineering. He is currently deciding between Arizona State University [78], Purdue University [79], or Virginia Tech [80], depending on scholarships and the pending FASFA release. He participates in the Trivium Mentorship Program and is the engineering lead of the highest awarded robotics team in Arizona, who will represent Arizona at the first ever Robotics World Championship in April.

National Merit Finalist Tucker Flynn [81]Tucker Flynn from Scottsdale Prep [82]
Flynn currently plans to study neuroscience with an emphasis in biochemistry and biomedical engineering with a specialization in biocompatible materials via a dual-degree program between Fordham University [83] and Columbia University [84] in New York. Outside of school, Flynn enjoys playing the piano and volunteering in the laboratory of a local hospital.

National Merit Finalist Mary Herbert [85]Mary Herbert from Veritas Prep [86]
Herbert not only has an impressive academic record, but she is also an outstanding community member at Veritas Prep [86]. She is a house leader which allows her to guide 125 younger students through various spirit activities throughout the year. Herbert was on the varsity swim team and is currently on the varsity track and field team, qualifying for state in the 100 and 300 hurdles. After graduation, Herbert will serve on a church mission for 18 months before attending Grand Canyon University [87] to obtain a degree in finance.

National Merit Finalist Annika Kimery [88]Annika Kimery from Scottsdale Prep [82]
Kimery plans to study biomedical engineering and nutrition science. She will attend either the United States Military Academy at West Point [89] or the University of Alabama [90], but still remains undecided at this time. Outside of school, she enjoys swimming for the Scottsdale Aquatic Club [91], competing on Scottsdale Prep’s [82] track and field team, and competitively showing horses.

National Merit Finalist Andrew Kulhan [92]Andrew Kulhan from Scottsdale Prep [82]
Kulhan will be attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) [93] next year with an Air Force ROTC [94] full tuition scholarship. There he will be majoring in mechanical engineering and playing football on the varsity team. In his free time, Kulhan enjoys lifting at the gym and reading philosophy.

National Merit Finalist Alessandro Marcolini [95]Alessandro Marcolini from Glendale Prep [64]
Marcolini is also a National Hispanic Scholar, he scored a perfect 36 on the ACT [96], and was recognized as a Flinn Scholarship [97] Semi-finalist. He is the lead programmer for the robotics team having independently taught himself various coding techniques. Marcolini has taken what he has learned and created a coding library to assist others in Robotics – even receiving a request from London, England to access his research. He provides leadership to the Glendale Prep’s [64] boys tennis team and earned the Griffin Award last year. This award recognized him has the male high school student who best embodies excellence in academics, athletics, and sportsmanship. Privately pursuing piano lessons for years, Marcolini has shared his talent by performing live music during drama productions and parent events highlighting the fine arts. He is still deciding on what university to attend next fall.

National Merit Finalist Leah Schlarman [98]Leah Schlarman from Chandler Prep [99]
Schlarman loves to sing in the choirs at Chandler Prep [99] and has enjoyed singing in state, regional, and national honor choirs throughout her high school career. She is interested in studying biology in college. She is looking to attend school either in-state, California, or on the East Coast next year. Schlarman is looking forward to her future and all that it will bring!

National Merit Finalist Sumedh Seetharam [100]Sumedh Seetharam from Scottsdale Prep [82]
Seetharam plans to study biomedical and bioengineering, with an emphasis in neurological and immune engineering. He suggests that, once you have familiarized yourself with the content necessary to complete the PSAT, that you should take practice tests with increasing frequency until the final month before the test, because a majority of the difficulty with standardized tests come from the nature of the questions, and understanding all of the question types will save you valuable time on test day. He is still waiting on admissions decisions that should come out any day now.

National Merit Finalist Christian Song [101]Christian Song from Scottsdale Prep [82]
Song plans to attend Barrett, the Honors at Arizona State University [102] to study engineering, philosophy, or something similar in college. He enjoys working out at the gym, contemplating philosophy, and reading good non-fiction books.

National Merit Finalist Will Tinker [103]Will Tinker from Trivium Prep [77]
Tinker plans to study mechanical engineering at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University [104]. He has been a leader on his robotics team all four years of high school. Tinker has enjoyed having a classical education at Trivium Prep [77] as it has helped him round out his knowledge in all areas of life.

“Scoring in the top 1% in the state of Arizona is a very realistic goal for many juniors across the Great Hearts network,” said Great Hearts Director of College Counseling, Roslyn Fletcher. “We expose our high school students to the PSAT early by administering the official PSAT to all 10th grade students across the network. This exposure along with encouraging students to utilize free, personalized test prep through Khan Academy [105] generally result in 6 to 12 Semifinalists/Finalists each year. National Merit Finalists typically have the opportunity to pursue merit scholarships that cover full tuition and sometimes even more at many institutions across the country.”

We look forward to seeing great things in the future from these Great-Hearted scholars.
